Ben Hewson - Civil Plant
Operation Apprentice
Ben Hewson got into the infrastructure industry while he was
still at school, with a summer holiday job with Picton firm Dave
Fowler Contracting Ltd.
It wasn’t long until the company saw Ben’s
potential and offered him a full time position.
Ben has recently completed a Modern Apprenticeship in Civil Plant
Operation. As part of his apprenticeship he completed National
Certificates in Civil
Construction Works – Introductory Skills, Civil Plant Operation and Civil Construction Works.
“I absolutely love my job” says Ben.
“The thing I enjoy most is the variety – not doing the same
job every day. Projects I've
worked on include excavating a site in preparation for a new
house, putting in some big retaining walls and doing concrete works for
a private client. Every
day is different.”
Ben continues, “I do a lot of machine work and truck driving.
I’ve got a 5 ton CAT digger and a 190 horsepower Mitsubishi
truck, which are both mine to look after.
And I’ve got my Full Class 1, 2 and 4 Licences, and my Wheels
Tracks and Rollers.”
Doing a Modern Apprenticeship meant that Ben could continue his
education while he worked.
He says, “The
qualifications are well regarded by the industry - they show you are
highly skilled. They
are also essential for some projects, for example work for local
authorities, who now specify qualifications in their Engineering
Standards.”
