Daniel Elliott - Civil Plant Operation Apprentice

Daniel is doing a Modern Apprenticeship at Christchurch firm Isaac Construction, where he has progressed from being a Labourer to Junior Foreman in just 3 years.

Daniel wanted to work outdoors and learn new skills when he left school, so when a job came up at Isaac Construction he decided to give it a try – and with great success.  Six months into his employment, Daniel’s manager saw his potential and encouraged him to take up a Modern Apprenticeship.  As part of his apprenticeship, Daniel is now completing National Certificates in Civil Infrastructure – General Introductory Skills, and Civil Plant Operation.

A job in infrastructure is ideal for people who want an interesting range of work and lots of variety.  Daniel explains, “Although the majority of our work is for two main clients, Transit and Christchurch City Council, every day is different."

He continues, “Isaac Construction really encouraged me with my Modern Apprenticeship.  There is always something new to learn in this industry, and the qualifications show you have the skills for the job.  You really need to get qualified to progress up the career ladder, especially when you’re a foreman.  The ones with more qualifications tend to get the better, more interesting projects.

“Most of my learning is done at work.  It’s totally different from the way you learn at school.  InfraTrain provide you with workbooks for different tasks, and you work through the activities and do the task at work at the same time.  It really helps you to learn because you put the knowledge into practice straight away.”

Daniel is enthusiastic about the industry.  “It’s a great area to work in.  If you enjoy dealing with lots of different people, operating machinery, being outdoors and doing something physical that it’s definitely a good career choice.”

Daniel’s first priority is to complete his Modern Apprenticeship, then maybe some more qualifications in the future.  He says, “In this industry there are always opportunities to learn something new – you never stop.  And the better qualified you are, the further you can progress.”
