Everardus Schreurs -
Infrastructure Pipelaying Apprentice
The networks of pipes for utilities such as water, gas,
sewage and waste water are a vital part of infrastructure.
They are installed by people like Everardus
Schreurs (Ngapuhi), who provide an important service to the general public.
Everardus is completing a Modern Apprenticeship in
Infrastructure Pipelaying at Fulton Hogan in Silverdale,
Auckland.
As part of his apprenticeship he has already completed a
National Certificate in Civil Infrastructure – General Introductory
Skills, and he is now working towards National Certificates in
Infrastructure Pipelaying, Water Reticulation, and Road Opening
Trenching.
A Modern Apprenticeship means that Everardus
can gain specialist industry skills through on-job training.
He explains, “I’ve gained
skills in plant operation, opening and closing road trenches,
traffic control and pipelaying.
Infrastructure pipelaying is really varied.
One day I could be working on new subdivisions, and the next
I could be replacing existing pipes.
At the moment I’m working on a local authority project in
Rothesay
Bay, doing concrete and
kerb channel works and safety improvements.”
Working safely is also important - especially
when operating machinery.
Everardus has gained his Full Class 1 and Wheels Tracks and
Rollers Licences, which means he can drive compactors, diggers and
rollers. Health and
safety, and First Aid are also included in his apprenticeship.
When asked what he enjoys most about his job,
Everardus replies without hesitation – “The people. I have a great
mentor and work with a really great bunch of guys.
We all help each other out and get on well together.”
