Jayson Ruffles - getting ahead thanks to industry training

He may have left school without any qualifications, but Jayson Ruffles is getting ahead in his career, thanks to Industry Training.

Jayson, who is a Construction Supervisor at Civilscape in New Plymouth, has completed a National Certificate in Civil Construction (General Introductory Skills) through InfraTrain.  And now he’s working towards a National Certificate in Civil Construction Supervision.

“I’ve worked in infrastructure for years and have loads of experience” says Jayson.  “But times have changed since I left school and experience alone is no longer enough.  Nowadays you also need the certificate to prove your skills.”

He continues, “A lot of young people don’t realise that Industry Training is nothing like being at school.  The qualifications look daunting at first, you learn on the job and you get loads of support.  Getting qualified may not be your priority right now – but it will help you to work your way up much quicker.”

Jayson works on a wide range of projects at Civilscape and enjoys the variety of his work.  His long term goal is to “move off the tools” and take more responsibility for running the jobs.  “I really enjoy my job” he says.  “Once I’ve completed my Supervision certificate who knows what will be next?”
