Keresoma Laeli - a
career in Civil Construction Supervision
A move to New
Zealand gave Keresoma Laeli a career change, as well as fresh start
in a new country.
Kere is originally from Samoa and used to work
in the building industry. He got into civil infrastructure in
1996 – shortly after he and his family arrived in New Zealand.
Kere's current role is as a civil construction
supervisor at Downer NZ in Panmure.
He is manages two ground staff and several
sub-contractors.
While with Downer NZ, Kere has completed
National Certificates in Civil Infrastructure (General Introductory
Skills), Civil Construction Supervision, and Civil Infrastructure
Health, Safety and Environment (Operations).
Kere thrives on the extra responsibility of being
a supervisor. He explains, “Managing people is very satisfying.
It’s great to work as a team and see a job well done.
“At the moment I’m involved in two sites in East
Auckland, overseeing drainage, kerb and channel and road widening
work. As well as
managing the team, my job is still hands-on and I get plenty of time
on the machines.
Kere says, “The great thing about civil
construction is that there are so many opportunities.
If you have the right attitude and like working with your
hands then you can go far – I’m proof of that.”
