Phil Rowley - a cadetship in Civil Engineering
Phil Rowley started out in civil engineering as a full time
student at Otago Polytechnic.
However, he swapped the student life for an engineering
cadetship at Downer EDI Works in Dunedin, and is completing a
National Diploma in Civil Engineering (Applied).
Phil says, “The National Diploma in Civil
Engineering (Applied) has two components – theoretical knowledge and
applied skills. I
started the theory at Otago, and I’m just finishing the last few
units through block study at the New Zealand Institute of Highway
Technology in Christchurch.
At the same time I’m building a portfolio of my work skills
and experience, which makes up the applied component of the
qualification.”
Industry training has been a very effective way
for Phil to learn. He
says, “Working and studying at the same time answers all the
questions. Work helps
study and study helps work.
“I’m fortunate to be in a contract management
position because I can actually apply the theory which I’ve learned
to real-life situations.
It reinforces what I’ve learned off-job and benefits me in my
day to day work. I’ve
also been able to use examples from the projects I’ve worked on as
evidence of my skills and knowledge, for example health, safety and
environmental documents, tenders and pricing contract variations,
and project plans.”
“The cadet programme at Downer EDI Works is very
hands-on. We spend a
lot of time out on the ground which has is invaluable.
I’ve worked with crews on traffic management, vegetation
control, road surfacing, and have also spent time in the Works
laboratory. It opens
your eyes to the range of work which Works employees are doing, and
helps you to understand what is involved at the front line of the
company."
