Rotu Mikaere - a career in Traffic Management
Rotu Mikaere (Tuhoe),
known as Buffy, works as a Site Traffic Management Supervisor (STMS) on Level 2 and 3 roads.
Buffy has been working at
Integrated Traffic Solutions (ITS) in Auckland for four years, and has recently
achieved a
National
Certificate in Civil Infrastructure (General Introductory Skills)
and a National Certificate in Health, Safety and Environment
(Operations), which meets the requirements of the Operate Safe
Silver Card.
Buffy says,
“Gaining the qualifications was a real achievement for me – I feel
really good about them. For someone who knew very little when I got
into the industry I’ve come a long way.
My kids are really proud of me.”
Buffy enjoys the variety of work in Traffic
Management, and the responsibility that comes with it.
She explains, “First and foremost, an STMS is responsible for
the safety of others.
We take a lot of responsibility on our shoulders – if there is an
accident due to an unsafe closure then it falls back on you.
That can be both daunting and rewarding.”
Buffy feels that traffic management is a good
career option for women.
She says, “It’s a shame there aren’t more women in the
industry, but that’s changing gradually.
There are plenty of opportunities to progress and you gain a
wide range of experience by working on different projects.
It’s also very satisfying to see a job well done. My
workmates here are really good – they are a great crowd and we have
a good bond. The
industry is a great place to work.”
