Stephen Harris - Roadmarking Apprentice

Roadmarker Stephen Harris is getting ahead in his career - thanks to Industry Training.  Stephen completed a Modern Apprenticeship in roadmarking, and now has seven years of industry experience under his belt - and a career he is proud of.

Stephen admits he drifted into roadmarking.  At the age of 17 he needed to get some work experience, so offered his services to several local companies.  Greg Currie, owner of Coastline Roadmarkers in Whangarei saw Stephen’s potential and took him on board, putting him through InfraTrain qualifications.  He’s been part of the team ever since.

Stephen is a B-type roadmarking operator, which means he works on painted markings such as ones at intersections or those with a lot of detail.  He also tests and replaces non-painted markings such as ‘cats eyes.’

There are many things Stephen enjoys about his job.  He says, “It’s a good feeling to drive past something I’ve participated in.  I think ‘I painted that!’  I feel proud that I’m providing a service to the community and keeping people safe."

Stephen continues, “The qualifications look daunting at first, but you get loads of support.  I didn’t enjoy school, but I seemed to do a lot better with some one-to-one coaching and more practical activities.  The things you learn seem more relevant than when you’re at school, and you can apply them to your everyday work.

“Getting qualified will definitely get you places.  You have to work hard and be motivated, but it’s a smart thing to do and will benefit you down the track.  Industry training has helped me to reach my full potential and achieve some good things.  With support and encouragement, anyone can do the same.”
