Taylors Contracting, Nelson

Personal development and lifelong learning for staff are key values of Taylors Contracting in Nelson.

Taylors Contracting have been working with Industry Training Organisations such as InfraTrain for over 10 years.  A medium-sized company with around 50 staff, they currently have six trainees enrolled with InfraTrain.  These trainees are working towards National Certificates in areas ranging from Civil Plant Operation to Road Opening Trenching, as well as a National Diploma in Civil Engineering (Applied).  Three of the trainees are Modern Apprentices.

Taylors Contracting pride themselves on offering professional and personal support for people who are motivated to learn.   A weekly school has been started up to help their Modern Apprentices to go through their workbooks.  This involves a two hour study session on Monday mornings, where they can work through the units in the workbook under the guidance of Trainer/Assessor, Snow Edgar, then go out and put it into practice.  Learning is done in small steps, and tied in with the jobs the Modern Apprentices are actually working on at the time.

Other trainees receive a similar level of support and guidance and the lines of communication are always open.  Regular, realistic learning goals are set, and progress is closely monitored.

Taylor says training has huge benefits for a company like Taylors Contracting who pride themselves on having a skilled, safe and happy workforce.  He explains, “It’s really important to see our people succeed, which is why we invest heavily in training and make sure people are supported to achieve their goals.  We see training as adding to people’s life skills with valuable learning in areas such as time management and organisation skills, which are essential in and out of work.”

Taylor says a lot of smaller businesses are put off training because they are fearful of losing skilled workers after investing a lot of time and money.  “What they don’t recognise is that they may lose one person but gain another.  Every person you train and upskill is another in the pot for the industry as a whole.  If we all did our bit then we’d have a good-sized pool of skilled people.”

Ask for industry training - you'll be better off!
